Scar revisions range from the simple excision and reclosure of an unsightly scar, to the complicated redirecting and release of scar tension and tissue. In addition, techniques such as dermabrasion, laser resurfacing, or punch grafting may be used to optimize the final result, and these procedures are often done in conjunction with one of Dr. Alsarraf’s many dermatology colleagues who are experts at skin resurfacing.

Dr. Alsarraf cautions that not all scars can be removed in their entirety, but has himself published a teaching article on one advanced technique for scar revision, entitled “Geometric Broken Line Closure,” in a special issue of the Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics of North America dedicated to advances in scar revision techniques.

This article, along with Dr. Alsarraf’s other publications, is available for your review at The Newbury Center.

Most scar revisions take less than 1 hour and can be performed in either the office or an out-patient hospital setting, depending on patient preference.
